Tips On How to Write Song Lyrics - Become A Songwriter

If you want to write lyrics on something you know has been done a lot before then try it from a different perspective.

Decide how you want to write your song: Tune first or lyrics first.

Write as much detail as possible - remember it might not all go into your final lyrics.

Create a thought-provoking title but make sure it is relevant to your lyrics too.

If all else fails, simply make the lyrics a less prominent feature of the piece.

Words like "Fly", "High", "Sky" are very over used and will make your lyrics seem tacky.

The solution to this problem is to use words I call "Power words".

If you were using power words to describe a person, these would be words like radiant, robust, dashing, charming and charismatic.

Descriptive words like monster, shocking, gruesome and hellish are also power words.

Words like "Beautiful" or "Ugly" aren't power words in my dictionary of songwriting definitions.

A good definition of a "Power word" is a word that when written, read, spoken or heard immediately suggests something extraordinary.

Fill your songs with power words and good, original metaphors.

What the heck! If you have an idea for a song, you might as well write it down and organize it into a song.

If you were writing a song for children you would certainly avoid adult material of any kind.

The subject of the song might be falling in love; the message might be that there is someone for everyone; the story might tell of a man and a woman who meet and fall madly in love with each other.

You really want to enhance the story line from verses one and two, because the next verse will close the song.

It's time to close the song by writing the fourth verse and bring it all together like the last chapter of a book.

After you have completed writing your song, you may decide to write the music for it too.

Becoming a music writer won't require you to perform, sell or promote music but what you need to do is to simply create one that will remain in the hearts of the listeners.

There are many ways in which you can start creating a great music and you only need to ensure that you are equipped with the basic lessons in music composition.

You need to learn about coming up with great lyrics, melodies and chords or how to come up with a music as a lead sheet.

Since you have decided to compose music, do what you can to develop your skills and use them together with the basic lessons in music composition.

Basic Music Structure - By understanding the basic music structure you will be able to learn playing the music well or writing it.

Study More - Since having a music degree is not really required you need to ensure that you are always learning about the structure and techniques in music composition.
