Google Moto X will be made in the US

The gadget, called the Moto X, will be made in the US and will be part of a campaign to drive down the cost of smartphones and end the high profit margins companies such as Apple have enjoyed, said Dennis Woodside, the Google executive installed to run Motorola after it was acquired in late 2011.

Motorola Mobility, acquired by Google for $12.5 billion last August, is planning to release "Several new phones" in the fall, All Things D quoted Woodside, pictured above, as saying after speaking on the main stage at D11. The Moto X, formerly known as Google's "X Phone," uses "Battery-friendly sensor technology" similar to that found in Motorola Mobility's MotoActv smart watch.

"We're excited about the business. [But] we're really in the early days of Motorola with respect to Google's acquisition of it," Google CEO Larry Page told investors and analysts during the company's Q4 2012 earnings call.

When the search giant ponied up for Motorola, many industry watchers assumed Google would make Motorola devices running its Android operating system a centerpiece of its mobile strategy.

Woodside addressed how much Google is involved in Motorola's business.

Google's Motorola Mobility also is looking at new ways wearable-computing devices could confirm a smartphone user's identity, according to Regina Dugan, senior vice president of advanced technology and projects at Motorola Mobility.
